Venice, California, walking down the ocean promenade is half the fun, as there is so much more to see if you walk east. Main Street has the Clown in a Dress, nicknamed “Ballerina Clown” or “Clownerina.” It’s a ballerina clown in a dress, wearing over-sized white gloves and a red-nosed clown face. It is a Jonathan Borofsky’s creation made in 1989, it’s 30 feet tall above the CVS.
The rumor is there is an electric motor that makes the right leg execute a slow kick forward. It was turned off in 1990 as building tenants complained that it was too noisy. It was restored in 2014, and now the CVS Clown in Venice Beach kicks between 1pm and 6pm daily. Stop by it makes a great video and most people have not seen the clown in action.
